Patients often ask why does orthodontic treatment take so long. The simple answer is you can't rush nature. We follow the rules of nature, which requires us to use light forces for the most efficient movements.
When the wires are tied into the brackets, it exerts a force on the teeth and it cause cells in the bone to breakdown bone on the side the tooth is moving towards and other cells are stimulated to produce bone to fill in the space after the tooth has moved. Both of these cells have to work together to allow teeth to move. Due to the slow nature of bone remodelling we move teeth about 1mm a month and the reason why we usually see you every 6-8 weeks. Orthodontic treatment takes time, and is dependent on age and the type of malocclusion.
